Paphiopedilums are lovely Asian lady slipper orchids with showy flowers. From Victorian times there are extremely popular in cultivation, which is no surprise given their relative easiness of growing and outstanding beauty. They are mostly terrestrials and lithophytes and occasionally epiphytes with only five species of obligate epiphytes, they grow in different biomes and Paphiopedilum is a complex genus. There are six subgenera within this genus, which are divided by their morphological features, ecology, and phylogeny. Some green-leaf Paphiopedilums of subgenus Polyantha, such as Paphiopedilum rothschildianum ‘Raye’ x ‘Chester Hills’ AM/AOS are epiphytic and need more open and well-drained substrates and more rare watering, but they are warm to hot and also rather easy to grow and bloom. And Paphiopedilums of subgenus Paphiopedilum need cool winter rest to establish flowers, so they’re more difficult in indoor growing than intermediate to warm Paphiopedilums with mottled or green leaves.
